Tailteann Cup: Opening round defeat against Moylagh

St Ultans 1-10 Moylagh 2-9

Moylagh emerged victorious in St Ultans opening game of the season.

Moylagh started the brighter and had a two white flags before Ultans full back Sean Herward scored from play followed by Ruairi Buchanan to draw the sides level. Moylagh then scored a goal and point to re-establish a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. An impressive point from debutant Luke Cahill narrowed the gap to three but Moylagh hit he net again. Three unanswered points before half time from Buchanan (2) and Johnny Foster left three between the teams at the break.

The first significant moment in the second half was a penalty for Moylagh after an Ultans footblock, Keith Hennessy saved well but Moylough continued to maintain their advantage with the sides exchanging scores. Ultans were awarded a penalty after Johnny Foster was fouled in the box and it was expertly dispatched by Darren Kavanagh to leave Moylagh leading by just one. The next scores were going to be crucial and it was the Moylagh men who responded best and despite late efforts from Alex Casserly and Mark Allen, Moylagh ran out deserved winners. On a positive note, for Ultans, debutants Luke Cahill and Darren Hughes made their first starts for the club and didn’t look out of place.

Next up for Ultans is Kilmainham next Sunday.
