St Ultan’s 1-17 Longwood 0-7
Ultans started their 2023 league campaign with an encouraging win over Longwood in Sean Newman Park, last Saturday evening.
Debutant Alex Casserly opened the scoring with a well taken free. Adam Rogers and halfback Luke Cahill got on the score sheet between two points from the away side. It was at this stage when Ultans took control of the half. Points from Gearoid Rennicks, Mark Allen and Darren Kavanagh put the men in green and black in a strong position.
The killer blow came just before halftime when Rogers found the back of the net after a good run from half-forward Lee Hennessy to leave the score at the break 1-9 to 0-2.
As is always the case with Longwood they came out fighting in the second half. They scored the first two points of the second half and were applying strong pressure on the Ultans defence. Mark Allen stopped the rot for the Ultans with a point but Longwood scored the following two points again.
Through resolute defending, led by newcomer Andrew Harford, Ultans managed to turn the tide. They finished the stronger with points from substitutes Tommy and Ruari Buchanan. Casserly, Rennicks and Allen also kept the score board ticking over until the end of the game.
Next up in the league for St Ultans is Kells second team on Saturday.
