St Ultans 1-12
Kilmainhamwood 1-8
St Ultan’s started their campaign with a hard fought win against a determined Kilmainhamwood team on Friday night.
Kilmainhamwood opened the scoring. Ultans cancelled this out with a Mark Allen point. Both sides then had goal chances with Keith Hennessy saving well and Adam Rogers being denied at the other end. Paul Murray edged Ultans into an early lead with a score from distance but the Wood bounced back with three points in a row. Emmett Costello calmly slotted over just before the water break to leave the minimum between the sides at the water break. Ultans pushed on in the second quarter and with a further five points, from Emmett Costello, Jason Bennett, a brace from Adam Rogers and fine effort from the right wing from Ronan Breslin.
Kilmainhamwood opened the scoring but this was quickly cancelled out by Gearoid Rennicks. Kilmainhamwood needing a win to stay in the championship fought back with a goal and point in quick succession to draw the sides level. Mark Allen scored a goal from the narrowest of angles for Ultans to move back into a 3 point lead. A Gearoid Rennicks free and a further point from play from Mark Allen was enough to see Ultans run out winners by 4 points. Next up for St Ultans is St Brigids with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.
