Premier FC: Three point win in Oldcastle

Oldcastle 0-7 1-7 St Ultan’s

St Ultans GFC opened their Premier Football Championship, Division 4 Group A with victory against Oldcastle on Sunday morning in Millbrook. The men in green and black had a mix of experience and youth that blended together well for a hard won two points.

Ultans started the brighter with a goal within the first three minutes by full-forward Kevin Rogers. A lovely angled ball was played into him over the top of the Oldcastle defence by centre forward Ger Brennan and Rogers finished coolly to the net. Ultans used the advantage of playing with the wind through some excellent free taking from two debutants to championship football. Ruari Buchanan scored three frees in the first half, from near impossible angles. While Midfielder Johnny Foster kicked a peach of a long range free off the ground.

The tables were turned in the second half. Oldcastle, playing with the strong breeze now, put the Ultans rear guard under serious pressure. They dominated much of the second half. Ultans could only manage two points, again Buchanan and Foster scoring two excellent frees against the wind.

The Ultans defence deserve huge credit for their second half performance though. Lead by Shane Dolan they shut out an Oldcastle goal which was the winning of the game.

Next up for St Ultans in the newly formed Premier Championship is Clann na nGael at home on Sunday week.
